Client: Innovia Systems (Innovia Security)

Innovia Security manufactures Guardian®, the world’s most sophisticated banknote substrate, currently issued on 80 denominations across 24 countries. Innovia needed a specialised laboratory device that went beyond basic validation to forensically examine the complex security features built into these notes. Filament where asked to engineer a series of precision scanners built specifically for central banks to track counterfeit trends, and for retailers to validate notes at the source.
Taking ultra-complex analytical tools and turning them into an approachable, tailored product line.
Central banks and commercial customers had zero interest in off-the-shelf spectrometers and microscopes. Filament recognised that the solution required stripping away mechanical clutter in both the physical architecture and the software. To build total institutional trust, a complex scientific procedure had to behave like an approachable, modern consumer-level device.
Security hardware does not need to feel sterile; it requires a clean, intuitive interaction.

Filament engineered custom scanning heads that automated light sources, sensors, lenses, and clamping mechanics into a single scalable architecture. The software integration enabled the system to execute dual analytical modes - measuring microscopic layer thicknesses and mapping the unique optical fingerprint of the material at 12,000 readings per second. By stripping away mechanical clutter and visual noise, Filament reduced advanced material verification down to a simple red or green light, which meant Innovia could deploy advanced forensic technology directly into commercial environments without requiring specialist training.
Proving that high-security hardware can be exceptionally precise while remaining entirely human-centred.
Filament engineered custom firmware, automated clamping mechanics, and real-time graphical screens into a uniform architecture that scaled from a desktop lab scanner down to a pocket-sized handheld tool. This gave the Innovia sales team an immediate, tailored product line to demonstrate directly to global central banks.
Moving advanced forensic material analysis out of the lab and onto the retail counter.

The Verus™ product family secured a prestigious Red Dot Design Concept Award during its release. Working with Filament turned complex material science into a robust commercial product line that fits the harsh realities of high-volume transaction points. For central banks and law enforcement agencies, it offers an instant, unquestionable method to verify note circulation and protect public trust.
From a disruptive industry innovation to a retail-ready platform for global security leaders.
